It can happen so suddenly, you wake up one day, wash up, head to your closet and then quickly realize ‘you have NOTHING to wear’!
What now? You’ve spent hundreds of dollars on so called perfect pieces and now not a single one stands out as ‘wear worthy’.
How to do you turn this domestic dispute back into a head over heels romance?
The remedy? Cleaning out the Closet. As the new year approaches, get rid of the old and make room for the new!
Starting January 1st I will begin my monthly post on how to build a perfect wardrobe. To start that process one needs to identify the good that they already have and get rid of the bad.
Less is more people!

What to do
Prepare
Set aside a day to do the ‘dirty deed’. The week before do your laundry, that means heading to the dry cleaners too! Often I forget what I own simply because it’s in the hamper or my dry cleaning only pile. It’ll be easier to get rid of items if you know exactly what you have.

Get Organized
Make piles or bins for the following: Save IT, Lose IT, Sell IT

Go Through it all!
Go through your closet and look at each item of clothing that you own. Try and look at each piece objectively.
- Do you wear it?
- Is it in good condition?
- Does it fit?
- Is it comfortable?
- Do you feel good in it?
If you answer yes to all of those questions, then you have a keeper!
For other items that you’re not sure about ask the following questions:
- When did I wear it last?
- Did I receive any compliments while wearing it? How did I feel?
- Why haven’t I worn it since?
- Does it fit?
- Does it need mending?
- Is it still in style? Or will it be in style again?
Remember if you’re selling items they need to be in mint condition –and things that other people would want. Donate those completely out of date items or toss things that need too much mending.
For items that you own that are too big or small remember a good tailor can work wonders –but it’ll cost you. Do a little cost benefit analysis – will tailoring the item put it back to a staple in your wardrobe or will you make more selling the item at consignment and buying something new?
Playing Dress Up!
Once you’ve renovated your wardrobe, the fun part begins –playing dress up! Creating outfits before you need them is a great way to avoid that ‘nothing to wear feeling’ and ensure that no matter how last minute the occasion, you’ll always look well put together. This is also a great way to determine if there are any gaps in your wardrobe. Are you seriously lacking in the skirt department? Would a simple white t pull everything you own together? It’s funny how when you take an in-depth look at what you own, you realize it’s not so bad after all.
Unsure of an outfit? That’s what digital cameras are for!! Taking pictures of yourself can be a great way to determine if an outfit is wear worthy or unfit to be seen!

Happy Cleaning!
